INTEGRATING COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM AND ISLAMIC ECONOMIC VALUES FOR SUSTAINABLE LOCAL DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF PASAR TEMPO DOELOE GUNUNG KUNCI

The revitalization of cultural heritage areas through community-based tourism offers a promising path for sustainable economic growth in local contexts. This study examines the establishment of Pasar Tempo Doeloe Gunung Kunci as part of the broarder initiative to revive the historical site of Keraton Kartasura in Sukoharjo, Central Java. The project aims to empower local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through a cultural tourism model rooted in the principles of sustainability, inclusivity, and digital innovation. Using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method integrated with Community-Based Tourism (CBT) principles. The study engaged multiple stakeholders, like local government, academics, cultural figures, and community members, in planning, implementing, and reflection stages. The findings reveal that the initiative successfully reactivated the cultural and economic potential of Gunung Kunci by hosting a heritage-themed market that attracted thousand of visitors, increased MSME income, and reinforced cultural indentity through traditional aesthetics, languange, and practices. The program outcomes also include the creation of a structured market management system, strenghthened collaboration among community actors, improved marketing skills, and the formulation of sustainability roadmap of periodic market operations. This research contributes a novel model of Islamic-inspired sustainable local economy that combines digital promotion, inclusive community participation, and cultural heritage revitalization, that bridging tourism, culture and sustainable finance under a community empowerment framework.
