Abstrak

This study conducted a comprehensive systematic literature review to identify and categorise ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) implementation strategies in the financial sector, analyse their impact on institutional performance, and develop an integrated framework that links these strategies to their outcomes. Following the PRISMA framework, 85 high-quality studies published between 2018 and 2024 were systematically selected from major academic databases and analysed using thematic and content analysis. The findings reveal five main dimensions of ESG implementation strategies with 23 specific sub-strategies: Strategic Integration, Operational Integration, Risk Management Integration, Product Innovation, and Disclosure and Reporting. Performance outcomes analysis showed predominantly positive impacts across multiple dimensions: 70.7% of studies found positive financial performance with 2.3-8.7% increases in profitability, 5-15% valuation premiums, and 18-45 basis point reductions in cost of capital; 86.5% reported risk reduction with 7-23% lower portfolio volatility; 88.9% found reputational benefits including enhanced stakeholder trust and customer loyalty; and 89.7% reported positive sustainability impact. An integrated framework was developed that links implementation strategies with outcomes through mediating mechanisms, such as efficiency improvements, risk reduction, reputation enhancement, and innovation, moderated by contextual factors including regulatory stringency, institutional development, firm resources, and stakeholder pressures. The study identified significant challenges, including data quality issues (72.9% of studies), ESG rating divergence with correlations ranging from 0.38 to 0.71 between providers, organisational constraints (55.3%), greenwashing risks (45.9%), and difficulties in trade-off management (38.8%). This research contributes novelty through a comprehensive mapping of implementation strategies across financial institution types. This multidimensional performance assessment extends beyond financial metrics to include the systematic identification of contextual moderators and the development of an actionable, integrated framework. The findings provide evidence-based guidance for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers, demonstrating that ESG integration represents a strategic opportunity for value creation, risk mitigation, and contributing to sustainable development in the financial sector
